FUN MONDAY - HONORING OUR VETERANS

This week's hostess is Jan and she gives us this assignment:
Since Next Tuesday is Veterans Day, I thought it would be nice to salute our Veterans and show our appreciation. Photo requirement of something patriotic.

I'm posting a picture of my dad's Purple Heart. He served in the Army during World War II. Our family owned bakeries, so the Army made him a cook. He achieved the rank of Sergeant, and was part of the campaign that marched south to north up Italy.
Here's a look at a typical field kitchen

My Dad was shot in the back during that campaign, but the Army doctors did an amazing job and he made a full recovery. Today I honor him, and all those who have sacrificed to protect our freedoms.

My Dad will be 89 in February, and though he gave us a scare a couple of years ago, he's really doing well and staying active. These days my Dad is a "snowbird", dividing his time between Florida and New Jersey. He just came back to Florida yesterday, and I look forward to seeing him this coming weekend.

A nice post about your dad, and good to know he's doing great for his age. Glad you'll get to spend some time with him!

Thanks, Dad! Keeping the Army on its feet is a huge job and one that doesn't get recognized often enough. And obviously, it's dangerous too! Welcome back to the Sunshine State!

And what a loving honor you've bestowed!!!

Mine's posted...scroll down to the last of my Monday blog. See you there.

Great post! They deserve the honors. I'm a veteran but think the day should focus on COMBAT veterans.

If y'all change this to Fun Tuesday or something, I'll participate. And probably drag some of my minions into it too. It's a good Meme idea.

Thank You to your dad and all the sacrifices he had to make to serve our great country...and I use the word "serve" in a literal and figurative sense. AND, thanks to your family because they made sacrifices, too.

WOW! This is the first Purple Heart I've seen today.

My father-in-law was also a "cook/chef" in WWII. He has since passed away and didn't share too many stories with us. He didn't come home with a Purple Heart but he did bring back a Nazi Flag... I'm know there were thousands and thousands of soldiers there and many cooks, but wouldn't it be quite a coincidence if your dad and my father-in-law knew each other...his name was Claude Winters.

I'm glad his health is holding up. We are involved in a project here to fly the WWII vets to D.C. to see the Memorial there. I'm so hoping it all works out. There are so few of them left.

It's no wonder they call it THE GREATEST GENERATION ! Thanks for taking the time to post such a beautiful tribute to be shared with us.

Oh no, when your father was younger did he want to bring field kitchen dishes to family gatherings?!! What a great photo to share. I had no idea what the kitchens looked like. And, I'm glad your father still makes the trek to FL. Many years ago I lived and worked in St. Petersburg--mind yourself on the roads in the winter time!

everyone - thank you so much for the kind words...my Dad still cooks a lot, and bakes every chance he gets...and he is one fabulous baker

btw, funny coincidence...that is, of course, George Washington on the Purple Heart...and I was born on Washington's birthday (the real one, not the holiday)... and my Dad was born on Abe Lincoln's birthday

anon - thank you for sharing the sandusky site...i wish my home town had something like this

troll - don't know about changing "Fun Monday", but we could definitely start a "Totally Tuesday" (or something like that...)...why don't you pick a theme for next week...

My grandfather also received a Purple Heart. He is not with us anymore, but he did not die in combat. Enjoy your Dad and God Bless him!

I'm sure my dad would have liked to have a cook alone, one of his stories and reason he hates turnups is for a while that is all he and his men had to eat. God Bless your Dad and so please he is still doing well.

I hope he didn't have to peel too many potatoes (for some reason I always think that when talking about the Army cooks.)

Thanks to your dad for serving!!
